“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” ―George R.R. Martin
Hi, I’m Opal. And if I could bottle the musty smell of an old library, I would. And I would proceed to spray it on everything I owned― apart from my books, of course.
To be frank, I’ve put off doing this for a long, long time. Because I’m all set to do this blog, honestly; it’s just this introduction that I’ve struggled with. I thought I’d just get it over with, and had tons of ideas of what to write, and they all just slipped away. But now I’m just going to go for it, write it, edit it, and post it. Finally, I welcome you to my blog, Opal Unwritten.
About Unwritten, As A Blog. To avoid people asking me “why ‘Unwritten’?”, I’m going to explain now. I’m part of a lot of fandoms. Mainly books, but the Sherlock (BBC TV series), and Titanic (movie) are pretty amazing. In fandoms, just reading the books and obsessing over the words (and scenes) we have read (and watched) is not enough. Reciting quotes in the most obscurely-related situations is not enough. Part of the obsession is also reading between the lines; finding and proving theories; and writing our own spin-offs of what could have happened― in stories called fanfiction. We embellish the universes of our obsessions with the unwritten and unidentified elements of it― and that’s where I got the name. On my blog, I’ll be posting up regular book reviews, quick ideas and thoughts I have about characters, quotes, and certain parts of certain plots.
About Me, As A Reader. Besides the stories, the characters, the essays, and all the other parts to books― I have an incurable obsession for quotes, whether they’re from books, television shows, or movies. I have a small notebook in which I write down quotes, which I post on my Instagram. I’m always quoting something or buzzing with a sentence I read the previous day.
I prefer flipping the pages of real books (paperbacks over hardbacks any day) than Kindles, but I do prefer being able to get Kindle books with a few clicks, and I especially love the highlighting feature on the Kindle, where I can save passages or quotes that inspire me, or that I want to remember forever. Dog-eared books make me happy, and so do unorganised stacks of books I’ve never read.
I’ve lived a thousand lives inside the pages filled with words. Alice once said to herself, “what is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?” and I definitely know the use of a book without pictures; for I make them in my head. I lived seven years of Harry Potter’s life through the series, multiple times. I obsessed over Jem Carstairs and Will Herondale with Tessa Gray (but I’m probably leaning more towards Jem now), and cried with Auggie when he lost his dog, Daisy. I’ve lived through so many other characters, lived with them and as them through their stories, and I couldn’t have been more thankful. So here’s to books, until the very end.
Always remember that “all the stories are true” and that there’s much more to come, thank you so much for making it this far― I hope you will enjoy my blog.
Opal :)
